J Thomas & Co. create history at The Telegraph Merchant's and Challenge Cup 2015

Kolkata, July 31 (IBNS): There was a change of guard at the top of Ballentine’s presented The Telegraph Merchant’s and Challenge Cup as J Thomas & Co. ‘A’ clinched the Merchant’s Cup for the first time in its 108 years of competition at the Mecca of Indian golf, Royal Calcutta Golf Club.

Favourites Williamson Magor ‘A’ could not extend their winning run to another year as J Thomas & Co. ‘A’ played some inspired golf courtesy Gaurav Ghosh, Ranjit Singh, Manavi Halwasiya and Sanjay Choudhury.

Lakshman Singh of Williamson Magor ‘A’ commenting on their defeat said, “We are disappointed with the fact that our winning streak has been broken but also happy that the new winners are from the younger lot, highlighting that golf is indeed getting younger by the day.”

It was his son, Ranjit Singh of J Thomas & Co. ‘A’ who brought in the best gross card of one-under 71 and help his team grab an unprecedented victory.

McLeod & Co. won the Division I gross on count back against OIL India ‘A’ with a score of 230. Jusco were the clear winners of Division II by eight strokes with a score of 250 over Tata Steel ‘B’. There was surprise winner of the Division III title with Cognizant being runaway winners followed by Williamson Magor ‘B’.

The simultaneously played Challenge Cup, Barclay’s Wealth piped South India Projects by a stroke on the final day for a total of 209. Vyana Wealth Management took the 2nd runners up place a further five strokes behind.

The world’s oldest intercompany event, which first began in 1906, is presented by Ballantine’s. Standard Chartered is the banking partner with Amazing Thailand on board as a co-sponsor. Partnering the event are Voltas, 91.9 Friends FM along with Coca Cola and Kingfisher.

The format of play is rather gripping and exciting. The Merchant’s Cup shall be played on open stroke play and the Challenge Cup will be played on Callaway scoring system. The week-long prestigious event is managed by leading event management company Tiger Sports Marketing.
