Assam girl won gold and silver medal in Special Olympic

Guwahati, Aug 6 (IBNS) : An Assam girl, who won a gold medal and one silver medal in the recent Special Olympic held in Los Angeles in USA recently, returned to her state on Thursday as she was given a grand welcome by her fans and admirers here.

Laxmi Kumari, a student of Asha Special Children School, Narengi Cantonment in Guwahati had won a gold medal in Soft Ball and one silver medal in 50 meters Race in the Special Olympic World Summer Games held in Los Angeles in USA from July 20 to Aug 2.

Laxmi joined the school, which is run by Indian army, at the age of 7 with mild mental retardation and spinal disabilities.

"With her sheer grit and determination and the efforts of the school, she not only started normal physical activities, but also keenly participated in various sports events, " a teacher of Asha Special Children School said.

In 2013 Special Olympic held in New Castle in Australia, Laxmi had won one gold medal in Badminton singles, one silver medal in Badminton doubles and a silver medal in Badminton mixed doubles.

Laxmi also won one gold medal in Badminton singles and a silver medal in Badminton mixed doubles in the National Championship of Special Olympic Bharat held in Mumbai on July 19-23 in 2014.
