Gurkirat, Kunal lead Kolkata Juniors

Kolkata, Sept 30 (IBNS): Local lads Gurkirat Singh and Kunal Naidu led the way at the end of the first round of the Kolkata Juniors with identical scores of four over par 76. They enjoy a two stroke lead at the Par 72 Royal Calcutta Golf Club here.

The duo of Bibek Sardar and Md. Rohit sit tied for third placed with 78s while Udayajit Bhalotia is a further two strokes behind tied with Bishwam Ghosh for fifth.

Gurkirat and Kunal had contrasting starts to their rounds with Kunal hitting a birdie first up while Gurkirat dropped a stroke. A couple of bogeys later, Kunal took the turn at one-over 37 while Gurkirat having sinked a birdie 4 on the fourth hole, went out at three over 39 after a bogey on the seventh and a double on the ninth hole. Two bogeys and a birdie on the back nine helped Gurkirat card a 76, while Kunal hit two birdies but dropped five strokes including a double bogey 6 on the penultimate 17th hole to deny himself the sole lead.

The category C saw Souvik Nayak grab the bull by the horns with a brilliant 75, spoilt by an indifferent back nine on which he dropped four strokes. He leads Kaushal Bagrodia and Aroush Tagore by a massive fourteen strokes. Joysurjo Dey is fourth a further two strokes behind at 91 and Pinku Das in fifth at 92.

With a round of 90, Garv Lakhmani leads Arkan Basu by a stroke in the category D boys, while it is a tie for the third place between Manhar Bajoria and Suveer Kapoor a further stroke behind.

In the Girls’ event, Siddhi Kapoor leads Shushnata Deb by twelve strokes after a well rounded ten-over par 82. Chitrangada Singh after carding an 88 leads Smriti Bhargav by eight strokes. It is much closer in category D with Karishma Samadder leading Sinjini Mukherjee by four strokes with a card of 102.
