Chasing a score of 154 runs, England scored 159 for the loss of 3 wickets in 17.1 overs.
Jason Roy, who was adjudged the player of the match, scored 78 off 44 balls, hitting 11 fours and 2 sixes. Roy put up 82 runs for the opening stand along with Alex Hales (20).
Though Morgan missed out, scoring a duck as he was trapped in front by Sodhi, Root and Buttler saw them through.
The duo put up an unbeaten 49-run stand for the third wicket.
For the Kiwis, Sodhi claimed 2 wickets and Santner accounted for a scalp.
Earlier, Colin Munro smashed 46 runs as New Zealand posted 153 runs for the loss of eight wickets.
Skipper Kane Williamson (32) and Corey Anderson (28) contributed with the willow but could not convert the start they got in the match.
Munro smashed seven boundaries and a six in his knock.
Ben Stokes picked up three wickets for England.
