New Delhi, Apr 28 (IBNS) It took one outstanding knock from a South African to give Delhi some hope, but the Gujarat Lions had the final laugh as Chris Morris failed to hit a four of the final ball of the innings, thus, losing the encounter by a run here on Wednesday.

Needing around 120 runs in the last 10 overs, Morris, who walked in after Delhi lost their fourth wicket for just 57 runs, hit eight sixes and four fours as he played a superlative knock of 82 runs off 32 balls.

He was also involved in a 87-run partnership with JP Duminy, which they completed in 38 balls. By virtue of his breezy innings, Morris was adjudged the player of the match.

Duminy scored 48 runs but was responsible for holding the Delhi innings from one end while the other witnessed a parade from the remaining top order batsmen.

The match saw a constant change in balance as Delhi, who were down and out in the first part of their innings, came back strongly and looked to win it with balls to spare, but an experienced Pravin Kumar pulled it off for his side.

Bowling the penultimate over with 18 runs to defend, PK gave away just four runs to set the tone for the final over of the day.

Dwayne Bravo too bowled well under pressure, keeping it down to 12 runs to wit it for his side.

Asked to bat first, the Gujarat batsmen scored 172 runs for the loss of six wickets, riding on their opening stand.

The Gujarat openers, comprising of Dwayne Smith and Brendon McCullum each scored a fifty to post a century plus stand.

112 runs were scored in 10.4 overs, as Smith hit three sixes and five fours in his 30-ball knock of 53 runs. McCullum scored 60 runs off 36 balls and clubbed equal number of sixes and six fours.

The other batsmen who followed the opening pair however failed to scored anything substantial as Imran Tahir and Chris Morris picked up five wickets between them.

Dinesh Kartik (19) and James Faulkner (22) were the only other batsmen to reach the double-figure mark.

Tahir claimed three wickets, followed by two and one by Morris and Duminy respectively.
