Dubai, May 13 (IBNS) The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday lauded former England Women's cricket team captain and top order batsman Charlotte Edwards, who announced her retirement from cricket recently.

Edwards made her debut in 1996 and played the game for two decades.

She also presided over the national side for a decade, until her retirement.

In a citation, ICC Chief Executive David Richardson said, "Charlotte has made an invaluable contribution to women’s cricket, her career coinciding with a period of unprecedented growth in the popularity, profile and quality of the women’s game. She has been a true ambassador of the sport and has inspired and motivated an entire generation of aspiring female cricketers around the globe."

"Her record as captain and top-order batsman has made her a household name, remaining the cornerstone of England’s top order for more than a decade," he added.

Edwards has won all the major women competitions. She is a three-time Ashes winning skipper.

"On behalf of the ICC, I wish to congratulate Charlotte on her career and wish her the best for her future. I hope that she will continue to remain associated with the sport in one form or the other," the chief executive concluded.
