Bopanna choose Myneni over Paes
New Delhi, Jun 10 (IBNS): In his communication to the All India Tennis Association (AITA), Rohan Bopanna has stated that Saketh Myneni is his choice of partner for the men's doubles tournament in the Rio Olympics, according to media reports.
Ever since Bopanna got a direct ticket to the Rio Games by virtue of his top 10 ATP ranking, speculations have been rife if he will or will not choose veteran tennis player Leander Paes as his partner.
Now all eyes are on the selectors who will chose the team on Saturday.
If chosen, Paes, who has 18 Grand Slam titles to his credit, will be playing for a record seventh time in the Olympics.
Paes, ranked 46 in the world at the moment, won the mixed doubles title with Martina Hingis at the French Open.
He is also India’s highest-ranked doubles player after Bopanna.
During the 2012 tennis team selection for the London Olympics, a similar controversy had taken place when Mahesh Bhupathi and Bopanna teamed up leaving Paes to partner a rather inexperienced Vishnu Vardhan. Paes-Vardhan lost in the second round.
For the mixed doubles team, according to media reports, Sania Mirza has also conveyed the name of her choice of partner to the AITA on Thursday but refused to divulge the name to the media. In 2012, she was paired up with Paes.
It is expected Sania Mirza will team up with Rohan Bopanna for the mixed doubles tournament in Rio.
