Rio de Janeiro, Aug 6 (IBNS): Indian tennis great, Leander Paes wrote himself in the pages of history books when he walked alongside the other Indian athletes in the Olympics opening ceremony on Friday in Rio de Janeiro.

This is Paes' seventh Olympics participation, a record by an athlete in any discipline.

"We did it India...Number 7 is Our Olympic Record!!!" Paes tweeted after he achieved this feat.

"What an amazing atmosphere at the Maracana today. The greatest joy I've had as an athlete is to march into the stadium and complete number seven for India. Thank you so much for the years of support. We created the record together," he said in a video message.

"Great experience today lasting 28 years of Olympic dreams...Ready to start my Rio campaign," another tweet read.

The Kolkata lad started off as a prodigious young talent, capturing the global tennis circuit in the junior division before showing off his class and consistency in the professional level.

With 18 (combined) Grand Slam Doubles and Mix Doubles titles, Leander Paes is one of the finest player the sport has witnessed.

He has also won an Olympic Bronze medal in the 1996 summer Olympics.
