Root-Ali help England reached 311-4 against India on Day 1

Rajkot, Nov 9 (IBNS): Joe Root (124) and Moeen Ali (99*) added crucial 179 runs in the fourth wicket partnership which helped England reach a comfortable margin of 311 runs for the loss of four wickets at the end of the first day of the first Test against India here on Wednesday.

After England were reduced to 102 for three, the visitors needed a someone to rescue them out of the situation.

Root and Ali came out in the middle with the determination to deliver.

Smashing 11 boundaries and six in his 180-ball knock and moving on to score a century, Root played a memorable innings here.

He got the support of Ali at the other end of the crease.

Umesh Yadav picked up the wicket of Root late in the day, as England were left with Ali and

Ben Stokes (19) to move the proceedings on Thursday.

England have lost the wickets of Alaister Cook (21), Haseeb Hameed (31) Ben Duckett  (13) and Root.

R AShwin picked up two wickets for India.
