Bairstow departs post 50, England trail by 264 runs
At lunch, England are on 191 runs for the loss of six wickets and are trailing by 264 runs.
Ben Stokes (55 not out) and Adil Rashid (1) will resume batting post lunch.
Coming in to bat with their side placed precariously at 80 runs for the loss of five wicket, the right and left hand partnership of Bairstow and Stokes bailed their team out from a further slump, though they still need 64 runs to avoid a possible follow-on.
England's chances were aided by some sloppy glovework by Indian wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha, who missed a stumping chance and dropped a low catch.
Bairstow (53) batted beautifully before being undone by a reverse swinging yorker by Umesh, that send his leg stump cartwheeling.
His 152-ball innings was laden with five fours.
For India, Ravichandran Ashwin is leading the bowling charts with two wickets, with one each for Jayant Yadav, Umesh and Shami, who accounted for English skipper Cook's wicket.
