ODI: Kohli, Jadhav smash century as India beat England by 7 wickets

Pune, Jan 15 (IBNS): In a remarkable display with his willow, Indian captain Virat Kohli hammered 122 runs and added 200 runs in the fifth wicket partnership with Kedar Jadhav to help the home side beat England by three wickets in the first match of the ODI series here on Sunday.

In a high-scoring encounter, India chased down England's massive 351 runs target with 11 balls to spare.

After England posted 350 runs for the loss seven wickets, India showcased marvellous batting to reached the winning score of 356 runs for seven wickets.

With three top-order players-KL Rahul (8), Shikhar Dhawan (1) and Yuvraj Singh (15)- departing early and the scorecard reading 56 for three, India looked in deep trouble.

Things worsened when former skipper MS Dhoni walked down towards the pavilion after contributing just six runs with his willow.

Kohli and Jadhav were left with the task of fixing situation and they showed their class in batting to recover India from the tough situation.

A 200 runs partnership ensured India neared the target.

Kohli played a heroic knock, smashing eight boundaries and five sixes, in his knock.

Jadhav gave the Indian captain strong company with his 76-ball 120 runs inninsg that was graced with 12 boundaries and four sixes.

After these two players departed, it was R Ashwin (15*), Ravindra Jadeja (13) and Hardik Pandya (40*) who ensured India script a memorable victory at the end.

Jake Ball picked up three wickets for England.

Earlier, England posted 350 runs for the loss of seven wickets.

Joe Root top scored for the side with his 78 runs.
