Sonowal presents sports award to Shiva Thapa

Guwahati, May 19 (IBNS): Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal presented United Brothers Club, Assam Sports Award to boxer Shiva Thapa in the best sportsperson of the year 2016 category at the function held at NEDFi Convention Centre in Guwahati on Friday.

 In the same programme Speaker Assam Legislative Assembly Hitendra Nath Goswami gave away most promising sports person award - 2016 Promila Daimari.

Organized by the United Sports Club the awards consist of citation, memento, sapling and cash prize.

Speaking on the occasion Sonowal thanked United Brothers Club for their endeavours in promoting sports and encouraging sports personalities.

He also said that the State Government is committed to promotion of sports and therefore, the government is taking several steps to provide fillip to sports.

Sonowal said that to encourage the sports persons to take sports in right earnest, his government has introduced sports scholarships besides taking decision to build play ground in each revenue village in the State.

Referring to State Government’s initiative of making Guwahati a sports capital, the Assam CM said that because of his government’s keen interests in developing sports infrastructure several sporting events of national and international nature are being held in Guwahati.

He also urged upon the parents and teachers to encourage their children and students to take sports with all sincerity.

Sonowal called upon the budding sports persons to emulate the grit, determination and diligence of sports personalities like Sachin Tendulkar and Pele who rose to the zenith of their sporting career by virtue of their sheer dedication.
          
Hailing para-cyclist Rakesh’s endeavour of taking a voyage on cycle from Singapore to India to generate awareness on his message ‘Save Rhino’, Sonowal said that the State Government would help Rakesh in his mission.

Speaking on the occasion Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami  also lauded the efforts of UBC for providing encouragements to the sports persons across the region.

He also requested Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to appoint independent Ministers to Sports as well as Culture for the development of both the disciplines.

Chief Minister’s Media Adviser Hrishikesh Goswami, MLA East Guwahati Siddhartha Bhattacharya along with the host of dignitaries were present at the function which also felicitated promising sports persons and sports organizers.
