Earlier in the day, India were bowled out by the Sri Lankan bowlers at a huge total of 600.
Shikhar Dhawan and Cheteshwar Pujara scored hundreds. While Dhawan scored 190 runs, Pujara was dismissed at 153.
There were several contributions from the middle order too. Ajinkya Rahane and Ravichandran Ashwin scored 57 and 47 runs respectively.
Debutant Hardik Pandya scored a quick 50 from just 49 deliveries.
Nuwan Pradeep had the best bowling figure for Sri Lanka with 6/132 in 31 overs. Lahiru Kumara picked up three Indian wickets.
Replying to the Indian innings, Sri Lanka kept on losing wickets at regular intervals and found struggling by the end of the day.
Upul Tharanga scored 64 runs but went runout.
Angelo Mathews and Dilruwan Perera remained not out at 54 and 6 runs at the stumps.
Mohammed Shami picked two Sri Lankan wickets on Day 2.
