Mumbai, Oct 22 (IBNS): India posted 280 runs for the loss of eight wickets in the first ODI match against New Zealand here on Sunday.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli smashed 121 runs off 126 balls, hammering nine boundaries and two sixes in his knock.

It was Kohli's memorable knock on the park that helped India set a competitive total on the scorecard.

After Rohit Sharma (20) and Shikhar Dhawan (9) departed, India were struggling at 2-29 at one point in the match.

Kohli and his sensible knock helped India in settling down the innings which was disturbed in the middle.

MS Dhoni (25), Bhuvneshwar Kumar (26) and Dinesh Karthik (37) contributed with their willows but could not convert the knock to big innings.

New Zealand's Trent Boult picked up four wickets while Tim Southee managed three wickets in the match.
