India's Mirabai Chanu wins gold in her category in World Weighlifting Championship

New Delhi, Nov 30 (IBNS): Mirabai Chanu became the first Indian in over two decades to win the Gold in World Weightlifting Championships, according to media reports.

She lifted 194kg (85kg in snatch and 109kg in clean and jerk) in all in the women’s 48kg at the event being held in Anaheim, US.

Indian President Ram Nath Kovind congratulated Chanu and the state of Manipur for giving the country champion sportswomen.

"Congratulations Mirabai Chanu for winning a gold medal in the World Weightlifting Championship. India is so proud of you. And congratulations Manipur for giving the country such a wonderful series of champion sportswomen!" said the President according to the official Twitter handle.

Thailand’s Sukcharoen Thunya won the silver medal with a total lift of 193 and Segura Ana Iris of Colombia won the bronze with 182kg.

The Union Ministry of Women and Child Development tweeted, "Heartiest congratulations to #MirabaiChanu on creating history by becoming the first Indian in over 2 decades to win Gold at the World Weightlifting Championship in Anaheim, USA."
