Melbourne, Jan 20 (IBNS): Super performance by Angelique Kerber helped her beat Russian Maria Sharapova in an Australian Open clash here on Saturday.

Kerber defeated the Russian star by 6-1 6-3.

This win kept Kerber as a major title contender in this edition of the tournament.

Breaking serve five times, Kerber took just little over four minutes to win the match.

Kerber, the 2016 winner, will meet in the fourth round clash either Agnieszka Radwanska or Hsieh Su-wei.

“I’m just so happy it’s 2018 and not 2017 anymore,” Kerber was quoted as saying by the tournament website after beating the former World number one.

“I learnt a lot from the last 24 months. Everybody who knows me knows I never give up, I always come back," she said.
