Canberra, Mar 25 (IBNS): Australia cricket team captain Steve Smith has been asked to step down from his position, media reports said on Sunday.

This comes after the Cricket Australia has launched a probe into the ball-tampering case involving Smith.

According to reports, Smith and senior players conspired to change the condition of the ball using sticky tape and grit from the pitch during the third test in Cape Town.

The incident has put the country's cricket in a deep crisis.
