Sydney, Mar 29 (IBNS): Suspended Australian cricketer Steve Smith has encountered an awkward moment during his brief press conference when his ball-tampering incident was compared to a popular show Married at First Sight by a show host, media reports said.

An emotional Steve, while taking questions from the media, came across a bizarre comment from Intern Pete, the host of Kyle and Jackie O Show.

Instead of questioning the former Australian skipper, Pete commented, "I want to let you know from the perspective of the non-sports community of Australians, to see you upset tonight is very sad."

"Mate I've got to tell you...hold your head high for what you have done because what's actually been worse is what Davina and Dean did on Married At First Sight" he added.

Smith, who was looking disturbed and remorse at the press conference, failed to react to the comment.

The organisers of the press conference immediately stopped Pete.

Pete has referred to the hit reality TV show, Married at First Sight, where Davina Rankin and Dean Well had cheated on their TV spouses.

Twitteratties had lashed out at Pete over his comment at the press conference.

Mitch McCann said, "Who’s the idiot making comments to Steve Smith about Married at First Sight."

Jake Maclaren tweeted, "Was heartbreaking to watch Steve Smith break down in that presser. And who was that clown from the Kyle and Jacky O show and WTF was he banging on about with Married at first sight? Absolutely classless. Also F*ck Kyle Sandilands."

Adam Roy Davey said, "What a flog that asked that shit about married at first sight during Steve Smiths press conference. Disrespectful, attention seeking cock head. Have a heart ffs."

Steph commented, "To the “journo” who looked Steve Smith straight in the eyes & continued his so called “question” but then went on to compared this saga to Married at First sight. Your an absolute joke & a complete knob. Hope you never work media again...."

James Brook said, "Someone from a disgraceful Sydney radio show decided to ask a question of Steve Smith comparing him to Married at first sight."

With tears rolling down his cheeks, Smith, who has been handed a 12-month ban by Cricket Australia after his name emerged in the ball-tampering scam, said he will regret the episode for the rest of his life.

Taking all responsibilities, Smith told media: "I made a serious error of judgement and I can understand the serious consequence."

"I don't blame anyone. I'm the captain of the Australian team. It's on my watch and I take responsibility for what happened last Saturday," he said on the recent ball tampering incident which hit Australian cricket hard and left millions of fans shocked across the globe.

"I will now regret it for the rest of my life," an emotional Smith said.

Smith, who repeatedly broke down during the conference, said the entire episode left him 'devastated'.

He was banned for a Test by ICC after the entire ball tampering episode came to light during the recently concluded third Test match against South Africa.

South Africa defeated Australia in the third Test to go up in the series 2-1.

Smith and David Warner, his deputy, were handed 12 months ban from playing international cricket by Cricket Australia on Wednesday.

Cameron Bancroft, who was caught red-handed during the act, has been suspended for nine months from playing cricket.
