Sharing an picture on image-sharing site Instagram, Virat wrote: "Wish you all the best in everything that you do my brother. You’ve changed the way batting was seen in the time you’ve played international cricket. My best wishes to you and your family for this amazing journey ahead 😃👍"

The former South African international bid adieu to the sport stating he was 'tired' and said it was the right time for youngsters to step in.

De Villers, polularly known as AB, is regarded by many as a modern day legend of the sport.

He excelled in batting and fielding and occasionally donned the the gloves and kept wickets.

His retirement, which came into effect immediately, saw him say goodbye to all three formats- Test, One Day International and Twenty Twenty- in cricket.

Among many records created by him, de Villiers holds the fastest ODI 50, 100 and 150 ever made in cricket. He achieved the treble in the same innings.
