First Test: England put 285/9 on opening day, R Ashwin picks up four wickets

Birmingham, Aug 1 (IBNS): After opting to bat first, England posted 285 runs for the loss of nine wickets on the first day of the opening Test match against India here on Wednesday.

Skipper Joe Root (80) and Jonny  Bairstow (70) remained the top scorers for England.

Indian bowlers kept picking up wickets at regular intervals to keep England at check.

R Ashwin picked up four wickets for four wickets for India while Shami added two more for the visitors.

Ashwin maintained a disciplined line and kept disturbing the opponents.

Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav took one wicket each for India.


Curran (24*) and James Anderson (0*) will resume proceedings on Thursday.
