Under 18 players from 21 countries to play in ITF tourney in Kolkata
Kolkata, Jan 19 (IBNS): Noted young players from 20 countries besides India will be seen in action at the ITF under-18 Junior Tennis Championship to be held at the red clay courts of Dakshin Kolikata Sangsad (DKS) here from January 20 to 26.
This would be 27th year of the DKS hosting this prestigious meet which has acted as the nursery for top Indian players such as Saniya Mirza and Somdeb Dev Burman.
DKS spokesperson Sujoy Kumar Ghosh said the countries from where entries have been received include USA, Great Britain, Switzerland, Italy, Poland, Singapore, Morocco, Belgium, China, Thailand, Hong Kong, Serbia, Netherlands, Philippines, Israel ,Chinese Taipei, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Iran, Slovenia and India.
Stijn Pel with ITF ranking of 137 from Netherlands and Weronika Baszak with 100 ITK ranking from Poland will be the highest ranked players in the main draw for boys and girls section of this meet respectively.
The Indian challenges in this tournament would be spearheaded by Dev Javia (194) and Rohan Mehra (449) in the boys group and Kaavya Sawhney (371), Malika Marathe (407), Sandeepti Singh Rao (boys) and Bhakti Parwani (635).
Four other boys and four other girls from India have also been allotted wild card entries in this championship. They are Vansh Bhagtani, Sammr Raina, Aditya Chopra and Anurag Agarwal (Boys) and Jagmeet Kaur Grewal, Gargi Power, Shreya Chakraborty and Shatavisa Ghosh (girls).
