47th All India School Regetta by Lake Club begin on Sunday
Kolkata, May 2 (IBNS): More than 320 students, both boys and girls, from 40 schools will take part in the 47th All India Invitation School Regatta, being organized by Lake Club at its course in Rabindra Sarovar lake here between May 5 to 11.
Briefing media persons here Thursday Joint Comvenor of the meet Subhasish Dasgupta informed that this prestigious event is the only of its kind in the country and has made its way into the Limca Book of Recordsas the biggest owing event in the country. This event is also serving as nursery for potential oarspersons many of whom have already made their mark in various national and international meets.
Lake Club Joint Secretary Debabrata Dutta said this event, which has been recognized by the Rowing Federaion of India, also coincides with the culmination of Summer Rowing Camp, organized every year by the club for school students free of cost. He said that this regatta provides a great motivation to the students to bring out the best out of best while providing an experience of national level competition at an early age.
Giving details about the championship Joint Convenor Shakeel Ahmed intimated that the event will consist of coxed fours for both boys and girls in senior (class XI and XII) and Junior (up to class X) categories.
Shakeel said that like last year the club would lo be organizing Indoor Rowing competition for students during the championship at the club venue. He said that Indoor Rowing, which is very popular in abroad, is also catching up fast in the country. Instead of water body, Indoor Rowing is simulated action being done on indoor through argometer.
The club is also organsing Indoor Rowing event for the specially-abled Persons which would be held during the same time and at same venue.
Kolkata Mayor and West Bengal Minister for Municipal Affairs and Urban Development Firhad Hakim will inaugurate the meet at 3:30 pm on Sunday.
