England end second day's play at 555/8, Joe Root smashes 218

Chennai: England scored 555 runs for the loss of eight wickets at the end of the second day of the first Test match against India here on Saturday.

English captain Joe Root displayed his brilliance with the willow as he smashed 218 runs.

He hit 19 boundaries and two sixes in the innings.

Ben Stokes added 82 runs with the bat.

Indian bowlers once against struggled with their performance and were failing to find English wickets.

Ishant Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravichandran Ashwin and Shahbaz Nadeem picked up two wickets each.
