Fifth Test: Australia finish day one with 287 for loss of 3 wickets as bad light stops play
Australian opening pair of David Warner and Chris Rogers once again provided their side with a foundation as the left handed batsmen posted 110 runs for the opening wicket partnership.
Rogers, playing the last Test match of his short International career, departed for 43. He had faced 100 deliveries and hit 7 fours.
David Warner looked solid and was set for his maiden ton of the series but fell 15 short, as the ‘pocket size dynamite’ departed for 85 runs, hitting 11 boundaries in the process.
Australian skipper Michael Clarke, who will hang his boots after the conclusion of this Test match, was given a guard-of-honour by the English side when he walked into bat. The New South Wales man managed 15 runs off 29 deliveries, while hitting a boundary in his short innings.
After a dry and lean patch, Steven Smith returned to his usual ways, scoring a fine fifty. Michael Clarke’s successor in both the ODI and Test format, Smith remained unbeaten at 78.
He along with Adam Voges has put on a century plus stand (101) for the fourth wicket, eliminating any further damage by the English bowlers.
For the hosts England, Mark Wood, Ben Stokes and off-spinner Moeen Ali has picked up a wicket each.
