The remaining of the batsmen returned to the pavilion without contributing much with their willows.
Ashwin ended the day with an impressive figure of 4-1-8-4 while Suresh Raina took two wickets and Ravindra Jadeja picked up a single wicket to end Sri Lanka's party.
Ashish Nehra and Jasprit Bumrah picked up a wicket each.
India won the series 2-1.
Speaking after the match, Indian skipper MS Dhoni said: "I feel it was a very good game, important we restricted them to a decent total. Ashwin was the pick but he was well supported by the others."
"We want to keep playing the way we re playing. Consistency will give us the confidence," he said.
With the ICC World T20 round the corner, Man of the Series R Ashwin hopes that his good form 'lasts forever'.
