Chennai: Skipper Joe Root displayed his skill with the willow as he added unbeaten 128 runs to help England reach 263 for the loss of three wickets on the first day of the first Test match here on Friday.

Opener Dom Sibley provided England the much needed start to the innings with his heroic 87 runs against India which is playing three spinners in the match.

Rory Burns added 33 runs.

Indian bowlers could not disturb Root in the innings so far as he smashed 14 boundaries and a six in his patient knock.

Jasprit Bumrah picked up two wickets for India while R Ashwin added 1.

Earlier in the day, England won the toss and opted to bat first.

This is the first Test match India is playing since winning the Test series against Australia.

The match also marked the return of international cricket to India post COVID-19 pandemic.
