Mayor’s Cup 2018 to offer scholarships to talented young cricketers
Kolkata, Nov 26 (IBNS): The Mayor's Cup 2018 school cricket tournament, which will begin from the first week of December in Kolkata, will offer scholarships to talented young players, according to the organizers.
The tournament, held in collaboration with the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), will have 48 teams competing for a prize money worth Rs 20 lakhs in all.
Winners from the group matches, which will be held in the grounds of Pailan World School, DPS Joka, Asian International School Howrah and DPS Howrah, will compete in a two-day league with the top four qualifying for the semi-finals.
Semi-finals will be in Jadavpur University's Salt Lake campus and the final will be taking place in Eden Gardens.
CAB joint secretary Avishek Dalmiya said they are offering scholarships in lieu of prize money so that the young players can offset some of their educational costs.
Debashish Kumar, Mayor-In-Council, Kolkata Municipal corporation appreciated the CAB for organizing the tournament and said that school cricket teams churn out some of the best players.
Four schools outside Kolkata have also been invited to participate in the tournament, the organizers said.
Various steps are being taken to promote the tournament among cricketing fans across India, including releasing a recording of a master class session with the coaches of KKR and live streaming the tournament on You Tube.
