Mumbai Indians appoint Mahela Jayawardena as head coach

Mumbai, Nov 18 (IBNS): Former Sri Lankan cricketer Mahela Jayawardena has been appointed as the head coach of IPL side Mumbai Indians.

"We welcome one of the most elegant & graceful batsmen of the modern era, @MahelaJay as the new Head Coach of Mumbai Indians. #WelcomeMahela," the IPL side tweeted.

Mahela Jayawardene’s appointment has come in the wake of Ricky Pointing – coach for the previous two years – contract coming to a close.

He will take charge of the side for the 2017 season of the IPL.

Commenting on the Sri Lankan’s appointment, Nita Ambani, Mumbai Indians was quoted as saying by the club website, “Jayawardene is an astute figure in the modern era of cricket. He is a perfect role-model for the young Mumbai Indians squad. I am sure our global fans, who have always believed in the team and expects the best – will welcome Mahela to our Mumbai Indians family.”

The Sri Lankan said he is looking forward to work with the team.

"I am looking forward to working with a really talented squad, all the support staff, and the owners to help strengthen the two-time IPL champions," he was quoted as saying by the club website.
