Rafael Nadal retires hurt, Marin Cilic to play Kyle Edmund in Australian Open semi-finals
Melbourne, Jan 23 (IBNS): Ending hopes of winning another title, Spain's Rafael Nadal retired hurt during the quater-finals clash of the singles event against Marin Cilic here on Tuesday.
Cilic will play against Britain's Kyle Edmund in the semi-finals.
Cilic reached the next round after 2009 champion and No.1 seed Rafael Nadal was forced to retire early in the fifth set trailing 3-6 6-3 7-6(5) 6-2 2-0.
Spain's Nadal, who lost to Swiss star Roger Federer in last year’s Australian Open final, was hampered by a hip injury in the fourth sets of the match.
Britain's Kyle Edmund defeated Grigor Dimitrov, in a stunning match, to move to the semi-finals at the Australian Open here on Tuesday.
He reached the semi-finals of a Grand Slam event for the first time.
Edmund defeated his opponent 6-4 3-6 6-3 6-4 in the match that left spectators stunned.
Edmund has become the sixth British man to reach the last four at a Grand Slam in the Open era.
He is ranked 49th in the world.
