Udayjit Bhalotia clinches Tata Steel Tolly Juniors Challenge 2014
Kolkata, July 31 (IBNS): Home favourite Udayjit Bhalotia took advantage of Gurkirat Singh's meltdown on the back nine to clinch the Tata Steel Tolly Juniors Challenge 2014 being played here at the par-70 Tollygunge Club.
He finished at nine-over par 149 to win the sixth leg of the Tata Steel East Zone Feeder and Sub Junior Tour by one stroke which was graced by one of India’s top professionals, Rahil Gangjee, who was the chief guest for the afternoon.
Hassan Rahman Khandokar improved by two strokes on his overnight score to card a four-over 74 for the day and finish in second place, while also winning the Category B title. Overnight leader Gurkirat Singh had a back nine to forget as he lost a five stroke advantage to finish in third place at ten-over par 150.
He was followed by M Rohind Singh in the fourth place a further four strokes behind while Bibek Sardar finished in fifth place at seventeen-over par 157 while clinching the runner up spot in Category B. Sreenjoy Majumder carded a gross of twenty one-over par 161 to be placed third in Category B.
Placed tied third overnight, Udayjit began with a birdie 3 on the 1st hole and followed it up with three pars on the trot. By this time he was trailing by two to the overnight leader Gurkirat who had a bogey 5 on the 3rd hole.
However, Udayjit dropped strokes on the 5th, 8th and 9th holes to go along with a birdie on the Par 5 7th to go out five strokes behind Gurkirat who played an even-par 34 front nine. It started turning around at the turn when Gurkirat dropped seven strokes including a triple bogey 7 on the 15th hole while Udayjit would make two bogeys on the 15th and the 18th after a birdie on the 12th to come in at two-over par 72 for the day and take home the 45 points.
Sandeep Kumar Yadav strolled to victory in Boys Category C when he shot a five-over par 77 to post a winning gross of thirteen-over par 153. Rajib Ali finished twenty two strokes behind in second place while Pinku Das made sure of his third place finish a further six strokes behind at 181. Assam’s Esha Sharma carded a wonderful five-over 75 for the day including an even-par 34 front nine to go home as Girls Category C winner.
The Boys Category D overnight deadlock was broken when Arav Sanghavi posted nineteen-over 89 to beat Kaushal Bagrodia by a stroke at 175 followed by Suveer Kapoor in third place at 183. Aahana Kapoor (213) won the Girls Category D by seven strokes over Vibha Nath (220).
