Dubai, May 2 (IBNS): Former Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman Lalit Modi has hailed 62-year old businessman Vijay Mallya for bringing "tremendous value" to the T-20 tournament, which began its journey in 2008.

Modi shared an old picture on Instagram where he could be seen with Mallya, the former chairman of United Spirits that owns IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Mallya was the owner of the franchise when IPL began.

Adding a caption to the picture, Modi hailed Mallya and other IPL team owners as well.

One thing for sure I can say that @thevijaymallya was critical to the success of @iplt20 and he did bring and added tremendous value to the brand @iplt20and to bring it what it was. The people that added to the brand creation are and have been @iamsrk @realpz @theshilpashetty@thevijaymallya @nitamambani@mukeshambaniofficial @iamjuhichawlaamongst others and there friends. Most grateful to them all. In life we all go thru ups and down. But let’s not forget how and who made it happen. 🙏🏽 from @fsdubai"

Modi has been in the UK since 2010 when the India Premier League was caught in a huge controversy over an alleged betting scandal.

Mallya has been absconding from India on charges of fraud and money laundering that amount to Rs 9,000 crore.

In April 2017, Vijay Mallya was arrested by the Scotland Yard. Currently, he is out on bail.
