India's World Cup hero and KKR's champion mentor Gautam Gambhir is likely to replace Rahul Dravid as national team's coach, media reports said.

The World Cup-winning former opener is ready to take up the responsibility despite his recent commitment to the IPL franchise, Knight Riders, reported India Today.

The  Board of Control for Cricket in India has invited applications for the post of head coach since Rahul Dravid's tenure ends in June.

The deadline for applying for the post ends on May 27.

Gautam Gambhir returned to Kolkata Knight Riders as mentor this year and under his mentorship the franchise won their third title.

It was the first time Gambhir joined the franchise since leaving it as a player in 2017.

Interestingly, the franchise had won the previous two titles under his leadership.

A source in the knowledge of developments told India Today Gambhir is prepared to take on the challenge of coaching the senior national team.

There was no formal approach made, but things moved forward between the board and Gambhir through informal chats, the source said.

Gambhir has no coaching experience at the highest level.

In his glorious career as a player, Gambhir played a pivotal role in India's T20 World Cup in South Africa and 2011 World Cup victory.
