WHO says this artificial sweetener in soft drinks possibly cancer causing, Pepsi says no plans to change portfolio

The World Health Organization has classified artificial sweeteners aspartame, which is commonly used in soft drinks, as 'possibly carcinogenic to humans' even as soft drink behemoths like Pepsico said they have no plans to change their product portfolio.

A new study finds a chemical formed when we digest a widely used sweetener is “genotoxic,” meaning it breaks up DNA. The chemical is also found in trace amounts in the sweetener itself, and the finding raises questions about how the sweetener may contribute to health problems.

Washington: Sugary drinks and artificially sweetened beverages are associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, which suggests artificially sweetened beverages may not be the healthy alternative they are often claimed to be, according to a research letter in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
