Earth's Moon to have a mini companion for two months: Know what it is
New Delhi: In a rare event, Earth’s lone satellite Moon will have a temporary companion for about two months, as our planet’s gravity will capture a wandering asteroid from September 29 to November 25 this year.
Bengaluru: ISRO Chairman S. Somanath stressed the necessity of international collaboration to develop a planetary protection system against asteroids, stating that no single country can achieve this alone, media reported.
NASA’s OSIRIS-REx brings first asteroid sample on Earth
After years of anticipation and hard work by NASA’s OSIRIS-REx (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification and Security – Regolith Explorer) team, a capsule of rocks and dust collected from asteroid Bennu finally is on Earth.
Massive 150-foot asteroid approaching Earth on April 6: NASA warns
As many as five asteroids are approaching Earth with two of them making their closest approaches to the planet on Monday, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) said in a statement.
NASA confirms DART Mission impact changed asteroid’s motion in space
Analysis of data obtained over the past two weeks by NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) investigation team shows the spacecraft's kinetic impact with its target asteroid, Dimorphos, successfully altered the asteroid’s orbit. This marks humanity’s first time purposely changing the motion of a celestial object and the first full-scale demonstration of asteroid deflection technology.
NASA's DART spacecraft crashes into asteroid
Los Angeles/UNI: A NASA spacecraft successfully slammed into an asteroid on Monday in a test to protect Earth in case of an asteroid impact threat.

NASA evaluates use of a coin-sized thermometer to characterize comets and Earthbound asteroids
Washington, Oct 30 (IBNS): Two NASA teams want to deploy a highly compact, sensitive thermometer that could characterize comets and even assist in the redirection or possible destruction of an asteroid on a collision course with Earth.
Small asteroid or comet 'visits' from beyond the solar system
Washington, oct 27 (IBNS): A small, recently discovered asteroid -- or perhaps a comet -- appears to have originated from outside the solar system, coming from somewhere else in our galaxy. If so, it would be the first "interstellar object" to be observed and confirmed by astronomers.
Asteroid flyby will benefit NASA detection and tracking network
Washington, July 30 (IBNS): NASA scientists are excited about the upcoming close flyby of a small asteroid and plan to use its upcoming October close approach to Earth as an opportunity not only for science, but to test NASA’s network of observatories and scientists who work with planetary defense.
