Lok Sabha Speaker Election: All Updates
The Indian Lok Sabha will witness a rare contest for the election of the Speaker on Wednesday with BJP's Om Birla, eyeing his second term, facing a challenge from INDIA alliance backed Congress MP K Suresh. K Suresh is the eight-time MP from Kerala's Mavelikara. Though NDA sought support from the INDIA bloc, the government and opposition failed to reach a consensus after the incumbent refused to give up the Deputy Speaker's post, which was demanded by the rival parties. The Speaker's election scheduled on Wednesday is expected to go in favour of the government with the numbers stacked up for the ruling NDA alliance.
Live Blog: The historic swearing-in of Narendra Modi
Narendra Modi is the second politician after Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru to become Prime Minister for the third consecutive term as he takes oath on June 9 evening at 7-15 pm along with a council of ministers in the presence of heads of states from neighbouring countries. Narendra Modi on June 4 returned for a rare third consecutive term in office with his allies, but fell short of an absolute majority for his BJP (240 seats as against 272 required), in an election that gave a new lease of life to a Congress-led disparate Opposition bloc- INDIA- as the anti-Modi union halted the saffron juggernaut to under 300. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by Modi's BJP garnered 293 seats while the opposition INDIA bloc bagged 234 in the 543-member Paliament.
