West Bengal Minister Firhad Hakim on Tuesday inaugurated Durgapur Jagoroni Sangha Kali Puja pandal. The pandal in south Kolkata's Chetla area assumes significance as children dress themselves up as different forms of Goddess Kali. People from far and wide visit it to see 'Jibanto Kali' (Human Goddess). Inaugurating the pandal, Hakim took a flower bouquet from one child who is dressed like the Goddess. Putting an end to restless wait, Indians on Thursday indulged in the grand celebration of Diwali amid bursting of crackers, fireworks and chains of dazzling lights adorning perhaps every corner of the country, which leaves almost no individual immune from the festive fever. In West Bengal and its capital city Kolkata, the celebration receives a special fillip with the observation of Kali Puja, which is considered to be the second most important festival after Durga Puja. Dedicated to the Hindu goddess Kali, it is celebrated every year on the new day of Hindu month Ashwin in Bengal. Interestingly on the occasion of Diwali, the entire India worships goddess Lakshmi- the Hindu goddess of wealth while the Bengalis, Assamese and Oriyas adore Goddess Kali.In Kolkata, Kali puja is celebrated with immense fun and mirth.
