Kolkata on Wednesday (Sept 4, 2024) witnessed a massive turnout of people throughout the night from 9 pm till midnight in the second vigil by tens and thousands of people demanding justice for the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder victim. The vigil was also meant to keep the eyes on the Supreme Court hearing of the case amid a CBI probe though the scheduled hearing from Sept 5 has been cancelled. From the Shyambazar five-point crossing and College Square in north Kolkata to Jadavpur 8B bus depot in the south, people sang and shouted one slogan- We want justice. ‘Dekh Rahe Hain Nayan’, a three-day theatre festival at the Kolkata Centre for Creativity (KCC), began on Aug 30 to celebrate the works of theatre legend Habib Tanvir. From theatre and movie stalwarts like Naseeruddin Shah to thespian MK Raina, actors Raghubir Yadav, Ratna Pathak Shah and filmmaker Sudhir Mishra along with writer-editor Anjum Katyal, who is on research and documentation, paid tribute to Tanvir on the inaugural day. The festival is an ode to one of the most influential playwrights and poets of post-independent India on his 100th birth anniversary. Tanvir's oeuvre at KCC is designed to include a diverse range of events, ranging from exhibition, masterclasses, panel discussions, film screenings and dramatic readings to dastangoi, musical and theatrical performances.
