People on Monday (Oct 12, 2015) performed 'Tarpan', a Hindu ritual of offering water to ancestors at the Ganga on the auspicious occasion of 'Mahalaya,' which marks the beginning of 'Debipaksha' or the day the goddess Durga is believed to have descended to earth.

The dawn of Tuesday (September 23,2014) morning commenced with the enchanting voice of late spiritual poet Birendra Krishna Bhadra narrating the Mahisasur Mardini on All India Radio and thus marking the ocassion of Mahalaya,which also heralds the Durga Puja countdown.Mahalaya marks the start of devipaksha (Fortnight of the Goddess)amid rituals by the pious Hindus in the Ganges.Hundreds of Hindus in Kolkata went to PrincepGhat and Babughat, on the banks of the Ganges to perform Tarpon,which the ritual of praying for their departed ancestors.
