Muslims in Kolkata observe Muharram today

Amid mourning and remembrance, the Muslim community in Kolkata on Saturday (Oct 24, 2015) observed 'Muharram' or the 'day of grief'. Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar. It is held to be the most sacred of all the months, excluding Ramadan. Processions were taken out by the community in different corners of the city where people were seen cutting themselves with knife and razors in public view. Images by Sounak Choudhury/IBNS.
