Nauru: OHCHR raises concerns about sexual assault allegations by asylum-seekers

New York, Oct 28 (IBNS): Underscoring the "fragile mental and physical condition" of 'Abyan' (the pseudonym for a Somalian refugee), who was allegedly raped in Nauru in July and was returned by Australia, the United Nations human rights office on Tuesday called upon both countries to urgently provide decent mental and physical care for her, including provisions to terminate her pregnancy, if she desires.

New York, Sept 30 (IBNS): Twelve UN agencies on Monday called for an end to violence and discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) adults, adolescents and children, and set out specific steps to protect these individuals.

New York, Sep 2 (IBNS): The UN human rights office said on Tuesday it is alarmed by the steep increase in the number of civilian casualties in Yemen's Taiz governorate in recent weeks, as well as by the "untenable" humanitarian situation which is being made worse by the blockage of supply routes into Taiz city by local "popular committees" affiliated with the Houthis.

New York, May 7 (IBNS): Disappointed by the ruling of a Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) military court which acquitted close to half of the 39 Congolese soldiers accused of mass rape in 2012, the United Nations Human Rights Office (OHCHR) said on Tuesday the decision fell short of the expectations of the numerous victims and confirmed the shortcoming of the country's justice system.
