Myanmar overtakes Afghanistan to become world’s top opium producer

Myanmar is now the world’s largest opium producer, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) reported on Tuesday, as the economic and political crisis following the 2021 coup and widening conflict between the military and armed groups continues to drive farmers towards illicit opium poppy production.

New York, Dec 17 (Just Earth News/IBNS) Opium poppy cultivation has stabilized at high levels in Myanmar and Lao People's Democratic Republic, but "the region’s demand for heroin remains at unacceptably high levels and transnational organized crime groups are making huge profits," according to a new survey released by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
