Beauty pageant for transgenders in Imphal

Imphal, Dec 31 (ANI): Transgenders in Imphal walked the ramp in glamorous outfits at a 'solidarity event' to protest the apex court's verdict criminalising homosexuality. Even though the Supreme Court has since recognized transgender people as a third gender and called on the government to ensure their equal rights, it does not recognize their right to have sexual relationships. Several non-government organizations in northeastern Tripura state joined hands to organise a beauty pageant where 23 transgenders sashayed down the ramp holding placards against Section 377. Many of the country's sexual minorities - especially transgender people who are more visible - live on fringes of society, are forced into sex trade, and face discrimination in employment and basic services such as health and education.
