Australian MP makes history, becomes first to breastfeed daughter in parliament

Canberra, May 11 (IBNS): Australian Senator Larissa Waters wrote herself into the history books when she became the first MP to breastfeed her child in the nation's Parliament, reports said.

Waters, who represents the left-wing Greens party, breastfed her two-month-old daughter Alia Joy during a vote on Tuesday.

After the news hit the market, a bemused Waters told BBC, "It's frankly ridiculous, really, that feeding one's baby is international news. Women have been breastfeeding for as long as time immemorial."

However, the young MP said that she wanted to set an example for other young women in the Parliament.

"I had hoped to not only be able to feed my baby but to send a message to young women that they belong in the parliament," she said.

Waters may have been the unprecedented case in Australia, but breastfeeding inside the Parliament had occurred earlier too in different countries.

Other examples include, Spanish MP Carolina Bescansa and Italian MP Licia Ronzulli, who did it in 2010.
