Car ploughs through pedestrians in Melbourne, 14 injured
Melbourne, Dec 21 (IBNS) : A car ploughed through a group of pedestrians during rush hour in Melbourne on Thursday, injuring at least 14 people, media reports said.
Two people, including the driver, are in custody following the incident at the intersection of Elizabeth and Swanston streets, near Flinders train station in the southern Australian city.
Victoria Police Commander Russell Barrett told reporters that 14 people had been injured and that several of them are in critical condition.
"At this stage we believe it was a deliberate act, but we don't yet know the motivation," he said.
Media reports quoted a section of police official as saying that it was a "deliberate act," though they declined to comment on its link with terrorists.
Victoria Police tweeted that officers were "currently attending an incident on Flinders Street between Elizabeth and Swanston streets where a vehicle has collided with a number of pedestrians.
A woman called Sue told 3AW radio: "As it (the car) approached this intersection... it just mowed everybody down, people were flying everywhere."
And man who was working in a nearby shop, and was at the scene before emergency services arrived, told the Australian Associated Press: "There was no screaming, just people lying there."
