Kyrgyz official warns UN Assembly of international dangers from unstable Afghanistan
“The illegal drug trafficking appears as one of the key problems of the entire region as a direct consequence of the situation in Afghanistan,” the Foreign Minister said, on Monday noting also the threats of terrorism and extremism emanating from the country.
These strong links undermine the achievements of Afghanistan’s security and its ability to ensure law and order in the country, he added, noting that the country on Monday inaugurated Ashraf Ghani as its new President with Abdullah Abdullah as Chief Executive Officer.
Addressing the theme of this year’s 69th high-level debate, which this year focuses on the preparation and implementation of a transformative development agenda, Abdyldaev spoke about the challenges to ending poverty in Kyrgyzstan. These include a mountainous territory, lack of access to sea, severe geo-climatic conditions, informational isolation, and high cost life maintenance.
He urged the international community to establish an international development fund for developing landlocked countries that would contribute to their sustainable development.
The Foreign Minister also requested international assistance with removing radioactive and toxic waste, within a framework already approved by the General Assembly.
