Cambridge, Mar 31 (IBNS): Thousands of mourners gathered on the streets of Cambridge, England, as the funeral of British physicist Stephen Hawking took place on Saturday morning.

The ceremony took place at the University Church of St. Mary the Great near Gonville and Caius College.

Hawking died on Mar 14 at an age of 76.

Hawking was known for writing several popular science books.

He wrote the science book titled 'A Brief History of Time'.

Hawking had a rare early-onset, slow-progressing form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) that gradually paralysed him over the decades.

He was still able to communicate using a single cheek muscle attached to a speech-generating device.

Interestingly, he was diagnosed with a rare form of motor neurone disease at the age of 22.

He was given just few years to live but Hawking went ahead to emerge as one of the most popular scientists of recent times.

His scientific works include a collaboration with Roger Penrose on gravitational singularity theorems in the framework of general relativity and the theoretical prediction that black holes emit radiation, often called Hawking radiation.
