Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull does a Donald Trump, drops climate policy

Canberra, Aug 20 (IBNS): Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull did a Donald Trump when he said that his administration is dropping its climate policy, citing lack of support from his colleagues.

The significant U-turn turn comes after a revolt from conservative MPs within the Australian cabinet.

"The original commitment would have set in legislation Australia's pledge for a 26 per cent cut in emissions, based on 2005 levels, by 2030," said a BBC report.

However, unlike the US President Trump, Australia will honour its Paris Climate accord promises.

Speaking about the incident, the Australian Prime Minister said: "In politics you have to focus on what you can deliver."

Defending his policy, he said that the plan was dropped as he feared it had a slim chance of passing through the House of Representatives, where he holds a tiny majority.

"Cheaper power has always been our number one priority when it comes to energy policy," Turnbull told reporters on Monday.

Meanwhile, reports have emerged that Turnbull is likely to face leadership challenges. Doubts have strengthened after he lost a by-election in Queensland recently.
