Muhammadu Buhari re-elected as Nigerian President
Abuja, Feb 27 (UNI) The Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) on Wednesday announced Muhammadu Buhari as the President of Nigeria, following the collation of results of the February 23 election, local media reported.
According to the INEC, he polled 15,191,847 votes, winning 19 of the 36 states, whereas his main challenger Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party has scored 11, 255,978 votes, securing 17 states, including the capital, Abuja.
Abubakar's People's Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the result.
A former soldier, Buhari led a military regime for 20 months in the 1980s and was first elected president in 2015, becoming the first opposition candidate to defeat an incumbent and win the presidency.
