Golan Heights: Israeli PM Netanyahu to visit US and meet President Trump today

Jerusalem, Mar 25 (UNI): Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to start his two-day visit to Washington on Monday to meet US President Donald Trump at the White House just a few days after Trump's controversial remarks about the disputed Golan Heights, local media reported.

On the first day of the visit, the two leaders are expected to hold a working meeting and discuss issues of common interest and the situation in the Middle East. The Golan Heights issue is expected to be on the agenda of the talks, along with security and intelligence cooperation between Israel and the United States, the situation in Syria and pressure on Iran.

On Thursday, Trump tweeted that it was time for the United States to recognise Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights, which Israel effectively annexed from Syria in 1981.

The US leader later said that he had been mulling over the issue for a very long time and it was a hard decision for him. The move is widely regarded as beneficial not only for Israel, but personally for Netanyahu who is running for re-election in parliamentary elections on April 9 despite being marred by a string of corruption allegations.
