Machakos, Kenya, Mar 27 (Xinhua/UNI) Fourteen people were killed and several others injured in a road accident early Wednesday after a Nairobi-bound bus rammed onto a stationary truck in Machakos County in eastern Kenya.

Yatta divisional police commander Njoroge Karanja said the commuter bus from Mandera in northeast Kenya was speeding towards Nairobi when it hit the truck, killing 11 men, two women and a child on the spot at around 5 a.m.

"We have launched investigations to establish the cause of the accident. It is not clear why the driver of the lorry did not place warnings on the road to warn other users," said Karanja.

Road accidents still continue to occur despite stringiest traffic rules which were introduced by the Kenyan government to help curb road carnage.

An estimated 3,000 Kenyans die in road accidents annually despite concerted efforts by the state and the private sector to promote safety on the highways, according to the National Transport and Safety Authority.
